How to Clean Your Gutters in Time for Fall

how-to-clean-your-gutters-in-time-for-fallThe holiday season will be here before you know it, and that means that life is about to get a whole lot busier. As you anticipate the season and think about all that you have to do to get ready for the fun, cleaning your gutters might not be high on your list of priorities, but it should be.

Autumn brings plenty of leaf litter and that can mean problems for gutter systems. Cleaning your gutters now while the weather is still warmer can help prevent you from ending up with damaging ice dams when the colder weather arrives.

To clean your gutters easily, follow these simple steps:

Gather the necessary supplies. You will need:

Ladder

Hook

Trowel or gutter scoop

Hose with a spray nozzle

Rubber gloves

Bucket (Optional)

You can purchase anything that you don’t already have at a hardware or home improvement store.

Place the ladder against your house in the area where you want to start cleaning.

Remove any covers from your gutters. The way that you’ll do this will vary depending on the type of gutter covers that you have installed.

Put on your gloves to protect your hands. Decaying leaf litter and other types of debris can be breeding grounds for germs that you don’t want to end up on your skin.

Scoop out all of the debris that is visible inside of the gutter. You can use a trowel, but a gutter scoop will make the process easier. Some people like to put the debris into a bucket to add it to a compost pile or dispose of it all in one area. You can also drop it on the ground.

Move the ladder as needed and clean out debris from every part of the gutter.

Stand at the far end of your gutter. Place the hose in the gutter and turn it on. Make sure that water is moving freely through the downspout. If it is, you’re finished.

If you find that the water is not moving freely, use the sprayer on your hose to clean out the downspout. First try clearing any clogs from the top. If this doesn’t work, take the spray nozzle off and feed the hose upwards through the gutter to rinse it out.

Replace the gutter covers.
